Well I decided to try GPS2Aperture today. First I got the no db message. I was able to find this forum and the answer to that one - very nice. I was using a managed system. So, I relocated some masters and tried the app - fantastic it had the gps info. I consolidated and all is good.
Until... I tried another batch of images and got this:
Error: [minor] Error reading PreviewImage data in MakerNotes - /Users/me/Desktop/GeoTag/081608_1.dng
0 image files updated
1 files weren't updated due to errors
Does it not work with dng? That is the only thing I can see as possibly being different from my first try.
Thanks - cool program!

Hi Ed,
That's an error being thrown up by EXIFTool which does the actual embedding of GPS data in the files. There shouldn't be any problems with DNG files, I just tested one to make sure and got no error.
Could you email me the DNG so that I can have a look at it and run further tests? Use support@ 'the URL of the website' as the address.
Thanks,
Ian
This is happening with lots of files. I am going to do a little more testing here.
Thanks for the quick response. I will let you know what I find.

I have tried this a couple times now. When I try to add the gps info in the native RAW format everything works fine. If I convert that file to a DNG and try again, I get the error.
ed
That's really odd. I just checked that it's not something to do with the new DNG version 1.2 format by making sure I had the latest DNG converter and the files tag OK.
What camera are you using, and which version of the DNG converter?
Ian
The problem is when I have shot with a Minolta 5D. I the latest version of the DNG converter.
When I tested it on DNG converted from my Canon, it worked. So it must be something in that format that is causing it.

Could you send me one of your files, then I can check if it's something to do with the version of EXIFTool used in GPS2Aperture.
Thanks,
Ian
I tried to send you a file, but even zipped they are 7.9M so I can't get it through email.

People have emailed 17MB files to me in the past without problems.
Could you try again, and if it fails I'll set up an FTP account so that you can upload it directly.
Ian
Just to follow up after some emails...
Apparently this is due to Adobe's DNG convertor not handling proprietary maker's notes properly in the conversion process, and EXIFTool (which does the actual tagging of images) then reports an error because it found bad data in part of the DNG file.
I'll add an over-ride option to GPS2Aperture, but until then Minolta and Olympus users may have to stay clear of DNG files...
