Merging two metadata fields into one: Aperture Assistant hanging!

Merging two metadata fields into one: Aperture Assistant hanging!

I just started trying Aperture Assistant. It certainly seems like a powerful application.

I am using Aperture 2.1.2. I am constantly warned by Aperture Assistant that it hasn't been tested with this version of Aperture. However, for the first few goes with this particular workflow everything worked exactly as I'd hoped, and I was very impressed. Now, however, AA hangs when running this particular workflow, and I can't work out why.

You can see an image of my workflow at http://richardflynn.net/uploads/apertureassistan.... Basically, I want it to take the current selection in Aperture, and look at whether or not those photos currently have anything in the IPTC:Caption field. Then, if they haven't, it should move the contents of the IPTC:Headline field into the IPTC:Caption field. If there is already data in the IPTC:Caption field, it should prepend that with the current contents of the IPTC:Headline field, with the string " • " separating the two fields' contents.

Like I say, it all worked fine for the first few tries. Now what happens—whether doing a trial run or an actual run of the workflow—is that it appears to hang on processing one particular photo, and never progresses. It's not one photo in particular which causes problems: just some photo from the current selection. I think it might be photos which have already got data in the IPTC:Caption field which are appearing to hang. Pressing "Cancel" achieves no effect: I can either close the workflow window (Cmd+W) or quit the application.

Has anyone got any ideas how I can achieve what I want? This is all necessitated by my ongoing move to the SmugMug photo hosting service which only has one 'caption' field for images, rather than separate 'title' and 'caption' fields.

How many images are you

How many images are you running this on at a time, what kind of length are the Headlines and Captions, and what OS version are you running?

I've just tried your workflow (a neat workaround for SmugMug, by the way!) on 150 images repeatedly and had no problems.

Thanks,

Ian

Ian, thanks for responding.

Ian, thanks for responding. I'm using OS X 10.5.5, and Aperture 2.1.2. I was trying to run the workflow on image-sets as small as 1, up to about 50 images.

However, the problem seems to have resolved itself. I think the workflow I had saved had somehow become corrupted. In my desperation I tried to recreate the workflow using the image I linked to up-thread as a guide. My new workflow looks exactly like the original workflow, but this one still actually runs! I've compared the XML of the two saved workflows, and whereas they are presented essentially the same way in the Aperture Assistant window, they do look a bit different in the XML. However, the differences seem to be mostly in the order in which the different modules (if that's the term you use?) appear in the XML: I can't see anything very fundamentally wrong with the saved workflow which has been shown not to work! If you're interested and/or think that it would help development, Ian, I'd be happy to send you both workflows for your own expert analysis!

Thanks anyway. Time to buy your application now!

Richard
